Public Surveillance Center

At 460 Bush is a surveillance center that embodies the process of recording, editing, and displaying through architecture. It explores the paradox of publicizing typically discreet surveillance footage and how the capture and recreation of such footage can distort or reframe original activity.

Drawing upon the pre-existing firehouse, as firefighters maintain a constant state of readiness to respond to emergencies, the surveillance center constantly records, ready to capture specific and unique moments of activity.Recorded activity culminates in projected displays occurring on the front and back facades and the exposed bottom surface of the building which is suspended above the ground floor.

During the day, recorded activity is projected on the facade allowing those inside to see out but those outside only see the projections.

At night, the projections are off and the brighter interior conditions allow those outside to see through the perforated screen.
